Matthew "Matt" Antoine (born April 2, 1985 in Prairie du Chien , Wisconsin ) is an American skeleton pilot .

Career

Matthew Antoine lives in Prairie du Chien and is trained by Orvie Garrett . In 2009 he graduated from the California University of Pennsylvania with a degree in sports management. Antoine has been involved in skeleton since 2003, after watching the US athletes' successes at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City on television , and has been a member of the US national team since 2005. His first major race was the US Championship in March 2004 in Lake Placid , where he finished 21st. It was not until the 2005/06 season that he was able to qualify for the international races for the first time in the national eliminations in the USA. In November 2005, he made his America's Cup debut and finished ninth at Lake Placid. Just one day later, he made it onto the podium in third place in his second race. The races in Park City and Calgary were not quite as successful , where he could not achieve a top position in the overall standings. At the Junior World Championships of the season in Igls , Antoine finished 12th.

In the following season he won all four races of the America's Cup in Lake Placid and Park City and finished second behind the British Andy Wood in the overall standings only due to double-digit placings in the two races in Calgary . He then drove in Winterberg for the first time in a race as part of the European Cup and finished sixth. In 2007 and 2008 Antoine was third in the US Championships. Due to good performances in the qualifying races for the international competitions Antoine could qualify for the 2007/08 season for the newly created Intercontinental Cup. The best places here were a third place in Park City and victory in the last race of the series in Lake Placid. Matt Antoine also won the competition overall. He finished fourth at the 2008 Junior World Championships in Igls.

In winter 2008/09 Antoine started again in the America's Cup and Intercontinental Cup , where he achieved several podium places. In February 2009 he made his debut in Koenigssee in the World Cup and finished eighth. In his third World Cup race in Whistler , he was third. At the 2009 World Cup , he finished ninth. In winter 2009/10 he was second in the overall ranking of the Intercontinental Cup . He could not qualify for the 2010 Olympic Games . In the 2010/11 World Cup season he regularly achieved results in the top 10, but without being on the podium. He was seventh overall; at the World Cup he was also seventh.

In the 2011/12 World Cup , Matthew Antoine once finished third and finished ninth in the overall World Cup. At the 2012 World Cup in Lake Placid, he was world champion with the US team and fifth in the individual. In the 2012/13 season he finished between 7 and 17 in the World Cup and was 12th overall; at the 2013 World Cup he was also 12th. The 2013/14 Olympic season was his most successful to date: he celebrated his first victory in the 2013/14 Skeleton World Cup in Lake Placid. With two third places and placements among the best seven in all eight races of the season, he finished third in the overall World Cup behind Martins and Tomass Dukurs . At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he won the bronze medal behind Alexander Tretyakov and Martins Dukurs.

Matthew Antoine started the 2014/15 season with a third place in Lake Placid. In Königssee he finished third again and finished fourth after placing 6 to 15 in the other races. At the 2015 Skeleton World Championships in Winterberg, he was twelfth in the individual and fifth in the team competition. In the following season he reached two fourth places in Park City and Whistler as the best World Cup placements and placed sixth in the overall standings. At the 2016 World Championships in Igls , he was eleventh in the individual and seventh in the team competition. In the winter of 2016/17 , Antoine was already on the podium again in the first two World Cup races with 3rd and 2nd place respectively.
