Architecture / construction data

The building in the urban context

After three years and several hundred drafts, today's design for the modern building with the characteristic, semi-arched opening and the 65 m long steel bridge , which is also reminiscent of the construction of the Shanghai World Financial Center , was determined. This bridge with its diagonal struts in the windows represents the visitor floor of the complex. The cavity above the last floor and to the left and right of the opening is completely crossed by steel struts. These struts and the bridge can be seen through the skylight from the conference room of the restaurant on the top floor. At night, the blue glazed facade and the aluminum- framed “hole” are illuminated with different colors. All of this was designed by Ellerbe Becket & Omrania and is located on a square, 94,000 m² area.

The complex, framed by the streets “Orouba Street”, “Olaya Street” and “King Fahad Road”, offers a total floor space of around 300,000 m². The actual tower is surrounded to the west by the hotel building and gardens, to the east by the shopping center and parking lots, and to the north and south by courtyard entrances planted with palm trees.

Each of the 41 floors of the tower has a floor area of 2,225 m²; Together the Kingdom Center consists of 230,000 m³ of concrete , 85,000 m² of wall surface and 670,000 m³ of stone .

Awards

The Kingdom Center was the tallest building in Saudi Arabia from its completion until 2012 . It is also the tallest skyscraper in the world with less than 50 floors. In 2002 it received the “ Emporis Skyscraper Award 2002” (at that time Skyscraper.com Award) for its impressive architecture as the best building in the category “Best new skyscraper of this year in terms of design and function”. In 2003 the “International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC)” presented the Al-Mamlaka shopping center with the “International Design and Development Award” in the “Innovative design and construction of a new project” category.
