The Bank of China Tower is a 367 meter high office tower in Hong Kong built in 1990 and has 72 upper floors. It is the fourth tallest office tower in the city and houses the headquarters of the Bank of China (Hong Kong) .

Description and architecture

Geometric model of the building shape

The geometric shape consists of four triangular elements that stand together and rise from a granite podium. The elements are of different heights and converge in inclined surfaces, reminiscent of a crystal. The outer surfaces consist of a framework structure that forms large triangular surfaces made of reflective glass. The steel girders carry white light strips that are animated at night.

The tower was built by the architect Ieoh Ming Pei , who, among other things, created the glass pyramid of the Louvre in Paris. He cited bamboo as a source of inspiration , which is a positive symbol in Chinese culture. The chief engineer was Leslie E. Robertson .

In the city, the building clearly stands out from others, making it a characteristic city feature. As a criticism, however, it is stated that it does not correspond to the principles of Feng Shui . The 43rd floor of the building is freely accessible to visitors and offers views of Victoria Harbor and across to Kowloon . Like many other skyscrapers, the Bank of China also reaches its official height of 367 m only including the metal spikes on the roof. They are part of the building architecture because they were intended by the architect in the draft, which would not be the case with radio antennas , for example . The tower is 305 m high to the roof.

The building was built by the Bank of China , whose logo is at the south entrance. It was later transferred to the newly founded subsidiary Bank of China (Hong Kong) , which has its headquarters in the building. Some floors are leased, including to the parent company. In contrast to the surrounding high-rise buildings, there is no illuminated logo on the roof.

The building is depicted on the front of Hong Kong dollar banknotes issued by the Bank of China (Hong Kong) .

The tower is currently the fourth tallest building in the city after the International Commerce Center , the Two International Finance Center and the Central Plaza . After its completion in 1990, the Bank of China Tower was the tallest building in the metropolis for two years until the Central Plaza was completed in 1992.
