The Waldspirale is the name of a residential complex in Darmstadt ( Germany ). The building, completed in 2000, was designed by the Viennese artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser and planned and executed by the architect Heinz M. Springmann . The developer is the bauverein AG Darmstadt .

The Waldspirale is a residential complex in the Bürgerpark district of Darmstadt with 105 apartments, an underground car park, a café, a bar and a kiosk. In the inner courtyard there is a children's playground and a small artificial lake. One of the special features of the U-shaped building is the eye-catching facade, which does not follow any design grid, with windows "dancing out of line" and "tree tenants", trees growing out of the windows.

The pitched roof, planted with trees and shrubs, runs like a ramp along the U-shape. At its highest point, the building reaches a height of twelve stories. During the construction of the building, 12,000 cubic meters of concrete with recycled aggregates were used.

Each of the more than 1000 windows of the Waldspirale is unique and is not arranged according to a grid. There are different handles on doors and windows in every apartment. Some of the apartments are designed in the style of Friedensreich Hundertwasser and have the typical colorful tiles in the bathroom and kitchen. Likewise, all corners of the ceiling and walls in these apartments are rounded in order to live up to Hundertwasser's credo “against the straight line and the right angle”. For cost reasons, only a few of the apartments in the complex could be designed so consistently individually.

From the outside the typical elements of the Hundertwasser style are striking : the golden onion domes , the lack of straight lines and corners, the colorful painting of the building in earth tones and the colorful ceramic columns.
