The castle tower is on Burgplatz in Düsseldorf and is used as a shipping museum.

description

The castle tower originally formed the northern end of the Düsseldorf castle . The first three floors of the tower date back to the 13th century. In 1552, Alessandro Pasqualini added a fourth, polygonal storey to the tower , which was decorated with Tuscan columns . The idea of a fifth floor came from King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. His court architect Friedrich August Stüler implemented it in a design in the so-called round arch style in 1845 . In 1883, Eberhard Westhofen installed a new portal on the tower. The round arches on the fifth floor were also glazed. In 1909 the tracery attic was removed when a tent roof was built . The current tent roof dates from 1950. Since 1984 the tower has been home to the shipping museum . In 2001 the tower received a new interior design. In total, the height of the castle tower is 33 meters.

Weather vane

According to the city of Düsseldorf, the wind vane is the figure of a fire blower , which was suggested by the building construction department manager Julius Schulte-Frohlinde , designed by the municipal building construction department employee Neuber and made in copper in 1957 by the Düsseldorf sculptor Ferdi Walther . The figure is said to commemorate the castle fire in 1872 .
