The 500-meter-long Hakenterrasse ( Polish: Wały Chrobrego ) is the most famous building ensemble in Szczecin , named after the construction of the City Building Councilor Wilhelm Meyer-Schwartau and named after the long-standing (1878–1907) Lord Mayor Hermann Haken . The facility, located on the western bank of the Oder , was built between 1900 and 1914 on the site of the former Fort Leopold .

description

The entire complex is made of sandstone blocks. A platform with the fountain grotto stands in the center. Carved into the stone are the name, construction dates (1902–1907), the coat of arms of the Pomeranian province and sculptures. To the left and right of the staircases are stylized lighthouses as lamp carriers. At the top, a large pavilion delimits the plateau on both sides . The slope embankment and the areas to the Oder are designed with meadows, bushes and groups of trees. Halfway up there is a semicircle with the sculpture Hercules fighting Nessos , made in 1913 by Karl Ludwig Manzel . The open staircase to the museum is located above the plateau.

Museum complex

Above the terrace stands the former Szczecin City Museum , which has been the Polish National Maritime Museum since the beginning of the 21st century. To the north of it is the former government building of the district of Stettin (now the administration of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship can be seen, 1906–1911 according to plans by Paul Kieschke and executed by Paul Lehmgrübner ). To the south follow the Maritime Academy, founded in 1966, in the neighboring buildings of the former Pomeranian State Tax Office (built 1914–1921 by Karl Hinckeldeyn and Heinrich Osterwold , main customs office until 1923) and the former Pomeranian State Insurance Institute (1902–1905 by Emil Drews ).

The hook terrace forms a unit with the museum both stylistically and structurally ( building ensemble ).

From May to October there is a ferry connection to Swinoujscie on the island of Usedom with the Bosman Express hydrofoil from the hook terrace .
