Hermann Haken (born  May 3, 1828 in Köslin , †  July 16, 1916 in Stettin ) was a German lawyer and politician. He achieved great fame as probably the most important Lord Mayor of Szczecin. During his 29-year term in office, he developed the capital of Pomerania into a modern city and one of the most important industrial and port cities in the Baltic Sea region.

Life

Hook studied in Greifswald and Berlin law . In 1847 he became a member of the Corps Pomerania Greifswald . He first found his calling as mayor in the Pomeranian port city of Kolberg . In addition to his local political activities, Haken was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives between 1873 and 1878 . He was a member of the National Liberal Party .

In 1878, Haken became mayor of Szczecin. In this office he initiated a generous expansion of the city into a modern city. The seaport was expanded and adapted to the needs of the industrial era. To the west of the old town, a generous Wilhelminian-style district was built between 1882 and 1910 on Haken's initiative , today's inner city. Most closely connected with the name of the mayor, however, is the Hakenterrasse road that is named after him . On the site of the abandoned Fort Leopold north of the old town, a representative promenade with wide stairs to the bank of the Oder was built between 1900 and 1914, flanked by Art Nouveau pavilions . The construction of the main cemetery in Szczecin is also based on Haken's initiative.

Hook represented the city of Stettin in the Prussian mansion between 1895 and until his retirement in 1907 . His successor as Lord Mayor was Friedrich Ackermann .

Grave in Stettin (bust of Karl Ludwig Manzel )

Hermann Haken was awarded honorary citizenship of the cities of Kolberg and Stettin while he was still alive .
