The Griffith Observatory ( English Griffith Observatory ) is a building in Los Angeles , California .

It is located on the south side of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park at a height of 300 meters. The observatory is known for its scientific exhibitions and the planetarium and can be visited by tourists and residents of the city. The panorama offers a view of the entire region from central Los Angeles to Santa Monica Bay and the Pacific Ocean .

The white domed building was completed on May 14, 1935 according to plans by John C. Austin and Russell W. Porter in a mixture of Art Deco and Egyptian styles. After four years of renovation, it reopened on November 2, 2006. 70 million people have visited the observatory since it opened.

It houses three main departments: the Hall of Science , the Planetarium, and the Laserium. Numerous exhibits can be seen. These include rocks from Mars , the moon and meteorites , a model of the Hubble space telescope , a seismograph and a 100 kilogram Foucault pendulum .

The building has been used for several films including ... Because They Don't Know What They're Doing (1955), Terminator (1984), Rocketeer (1991), The Violence End (1997), Bowfinger's Big Number (1999), Queen of the Damned (2001), Charlie's Angels - Full Throttle (2003), Transformers (2007), The Yes Man (2008) and La La Land (2017). It also appears in various video games, including GTA San Andreas , Mafia II and GTA 5 .

The building also served as a filming location in series, e.g. B. Four Fisted Trio ( Stressed Hospitality , 1984), MacGyver ( Pilot , 1985), Wonderful Years ( The Power of Darkness , 1993), and Star Trek: Spaceship Voyager ( Before the End of the Future , 1996).
