Russell W. Porter

Russell Williams Porter (born December 13, 1871 in Springfield , Vermont , † February 22, 1949 ) was an American polar explorer , artist and amateur astronomer.

He is often referred to as the founder of the amateur telescope builder movement. Among other things, he founded the Association of Amateur Telescope Makers in Springfield in the US state of Vermont in 1926.

After designing many amateur telescopes, Russell W. Porter was hired to help design the 200-inch telescope for the Mount Palomar Observatory . He later also worked on the planning of the Griffith Observatory as a consultant for the architectural team.

The lunar crater Porter was named after him. There's also Porter Crater on Mars , named after him.
