The Schängelbrunnen , originally also called the Schängelchen-Brunnen, is a fountain in the old town of Koblenz . It has stood in the town hall courtyard (today Willi-Hört-Platz ) since 1941 , surrounded by Renaissance and Baroque buildings . With this fountain, a memorial was erected to the Koblenz Schängel and his pranks, as well as the joy of life of the Koblenz citizens. The Schängelbrunnen is a landmark of the city of Koblenz.

history

The construction of the Schängelbrunnen goes back either to an initiative of the city inspector Wilhelm Smits, who headed the city's cultural office from 1925 to 1945, or to an initiative of Koblenz citizens (including the Koblenz carnivalist Jupp Flohr ). The fountain was designed in 1939 by the Mayen sculptor Carl Burger and completed by November of that year. The bronze Schängelfigur was cast in Munich in late 1939 / early 1940. In the summer of 1940, the Koblenz dialect poet Josef Cornelius , the author of the Schängelliedes , sat Professor Burger in his Mayen studio for one of the reliefs on the fountain column.

The preparations for the construction began at the end of September 1940, and the foundation stone was laid on October 29th. All work on the fountain monument was completed by June 6, 1941 at the latest. Since the Lord Mayor Otto Wittgen , who had been very committed to the erection of the monument, died before the ceremonial handover, his successor Nikolaus Simmer took over the inauguration. This took place on June 15, 1941 at the Koblenz town hall. The then 92-year-old Josef Cornelius, to whom the fountain is dedicated, also took part in this celebration.

The figure on the fountain was spared from the metal collections in World War II as well as from major war damage. Today the fountain, especially the bronze figure, is not only a monument to the Koblenz rascals, but also a symbol of the city of Koblenz. It is also a popular attraction for tourists in Koblenz's old town.

Relief of Josef Cornelius , the creator of the Schängelliedes , at the Schängelbrunnen

The octagonal fountain trough of the Schängelbrunnen is made of Eifel basalt lava . It is provided with reliefs that show boy pranks of the little Schängel. In the middle rises a fountain column with reliefs of the local poet Josef Cornelius, the composer Karl Kraehmer and the city's coat of arms. On top of it stands a bronze figure modeled after a boy. The then 11-year-old Rudolf Dany from Mayen was the model for the bronze figure and received a fee of 50 pfennigs from Burger for each session . The bronze figure spits a jet of water several meters over the fountain basin about every three minutes, so that passers-by can be hit by the water.

Monument protection

The Schängelbrunnen is a protected cultural monument according to the Monument Protection Act (DSchG) and entered in the list of monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It is in Koblenz's old town on Willi-Hört-Platz .

The Schängelbrunnen has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley since 2002 .
