history

Initial plans from 1901 envisaged a 60 meter long pier, which, however, did not meet the requirements due to the very high number of visitors. The first 508 meter long pier with a restaurant was built in 1906. Pack ice damaged the structure in 1918; in 1920 the bridgehead was destroyed by fire. In 1924 the bridge was damaged again by ice drift. In 1925 a new pier with a platform and concert hall was built; it was about 500 meters long. This bridge was largely destroyed in heavy ice in the winter of 1941/1942. The undestroyed bridge house was preserved. In the 1950s to 1970s, this was a popular dance hall. During this time, however, the structure of the building was neglected; In 1978 the ailing bridgehead and superstructures had to be demolished.

In 1991, Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker visited Sellin and thus actively supported the reconstruction. On August 27, 1992, the reconstruction began in several stages according to the designs of the Göhrener architects Müller & Herrmann, who were based on the models of the buildings from 1906 and 1925. On December 20, 1997, the honorary citizen of Sellin, Hans Knospe, symbolically cut the ribbon for the structural handover. The official opening of the new bridge house including catering took place on April 2nd, 1998. With a length of 394 meters, it is the longest pier on the island.
