The European Square ( Ukrainian Європе́йська пло́ща Jewropejska ploschtscha ) is a square and an important traffic junction in the center of the Ukrainian capital Kiev . The square is named after a hotel that once stood here.
The European Square is, next to the Majdan Nesaleschnosti and the Bessarabska Square , one of the three squares on Khreshchatyk .
Location and development
Khreshchatyk, Mychaila Hruschewskoho Street ( Михайла Грушевського ), which leads uphill to the National Art Museum , the Volodymyr Steig at the beginning of which there is the National Philharmonic of Ukraine and Trjochswjatytelska Street begin at European Square .
On the square there are some sights of the city such as the Ukrainian House ( Український дім ), the Dnepr Hotel , and the National Parliamentary Library . In the direction of the Dnieper bank is the Khreshchaty Park with the Monument to Friendship of Nations .
From 1892 to 1972 the first Kiev tram connected the European Square with the Post Square in Podil .
