Filippo Baldinucci (born June 3, 1625 in Florence , † January 10, 1696 ibid) was an Italian painter , art theorist and biographer, primarily Italian artists . His main work is the memo de 'professori del disegno da Cimabue in qua , which appeared in print between 1681 and 1728. He is also the author of the Vocabolario toscano dell'arte del disegno , a lexical overview of the vocabulary of artists, which Baldinucci published on behalf of the Accademia della Crusca in 1681.

Life

Filippo Baldinucci comes from an old Florentine family, his parents were the businessman Giovanni Baldinucci and Caterina da Valle. The young Filippo initially received artistic training in the workshops of the sculptor Jacopo Maria Foggini and the painter Matteo Rosselli . In addition to his work as a portraitist, he quickly gained the reputation of an exceptional art connoisseur and was employed in this capacity by Grand Duke Ferdinando II. De 'Medici and, among other things, commissioned with longer missions to Mantua and other places in Lombardy . Cardinal Leopoldo de 'Medici used Baldinucci to organize and expand his collection of drawings, which formed the basis of the later Gabinetto stampe e disegni of the Uffizi . The famous collection of artist self- portraits in this gallery also goes back to Baldinucci's activity.

Parallel to his work as an art agent and manager of Medicean art collections, Filippo Baldinucci began with an art-historiographical outline of the artists since Cimabue , the Notes de 'professori del disegno da Cimabue in qua , which represent the first extensive Florentine project of this kind since Giorgio Vasari . The writing is also a response to numerous similar works on local art histories that had been tackled in other Italian cities by Giulio Mancini , Giovanni Baglione , Carlo Cesare Malvasia and Raffaele Soprani, among others . Of the total of six volumes in the note , only three appeared during the author's lifetime.

In 1685 Baldinucci married Caterina Scalari, with whom he fathered five sons. The third-born Francesco Saverio Baldinucci supported his father in the work on the memo and continued the project after his death in 1696. Another son is the Jesuit Antonio Baldinucci, born in 1665 and beatified in 1893 .
