Carlo Cesare Malvasia
Carlo Cesare Malvasia (born December 18, 1616 in Bologna , † March 9, 1693 ibid) was an Italian scholar and historian, known for painter biographies.
Malvasia came from a noble family (he had the title of count). In his youth he received painting lessons, wrote poetry and was in Rome in 1639. He studied law, which he also taught in Bologna, and then theology with a degree in 1653. From 1662 he was canon at the Cathedral of Bologna .
He wrote a book about the Baroque painters of Bologna whom he saw as leaders in his time (especially Guido Reni ) as in the Renaissance the Florentine painters whose biographies Giorgio Vasari wrote. He was also an art collector and dealer (e.g. Bolognese paintings for the French King Louis XIV) and wrote an art guide for Bologna in 1690 and on the Aelia Laelia Crispis in 1683 .
