The Monument to the Friendship of Peoples ( Ukrainian Пам'ятник дружби народів Pamjatnyk druschby narodiw ; Russian Арка Дружбы народов ) is a group of monuments in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, dedicated to the friendship of peoples between Russia and Ukraine .
history
The monument was erected in the place of an open-air theater during the Soviet Union between 1978 and 1982 in preparation for the 1,500th anniversary of Kiev and commemorates the friendship between the “brother peoples” of the Ukrainians and the Russians with three monuments. It was opened in 1982 by the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Ukraine , Vladimir Shcherbitsky .
The monuments
The largest monument is the Arch of Friendship of Peoples ( Ukrainian Арка дружби народів Arka druschby narodiw ) made of unpainted titanium , and represents a rainbow with a diameter of 60 meters. It is supposed to symbolize the connection between the two peoples. The second monument is the granite-carved Pereyaslav monument and commemorates the Treaty of Pereyaslav 1654. It represents the Ukrainian hetman Bohdan Khmelnyzkyj (front), some Cossacks and the Russian ambassador Vasily Buturlin (left of him). The third monument is a 6.2 meter high bronze sculpture . It depicts a Russian and a Ukrainian worker who together hold up the bond of Soviet friendship between peoples. The sculpture commemorates the "reunification" between Russia and Ukraine.
location
The monument in the Shevchenko district is located in the Khreshchaty Park between the National Philharmonic of Ukraine on European Square and the lower Dnieper . An observation deck offers an excellent view of the Dnieper, the districts on the east bank and Podil .
