The Chreschtschatyj Park ( Ukrainian Хрещатий парк ) is a park with an area of 11.8 hectares in the center of the Ukrainian capital Kiev .
location
The park stretches between the European Square , the National Philharmonic of Ukraine and the Monument to the Friendship of Peoples to the Dnepruferweg and the area of the Valery Lobanovsky Stadium .
history
The park was laid out as part of the Tsarist Gardens on the orders of Tsarina Elisabeth in 1743. In 1872 a first and in 1876 a second water tower was built in the then Zarenpark. In 2003 the water tower from 1876 was rebuilt. In 2005 the building of the State Academic Puppet Theater , which is shaped like a fairytale castle, was opened in the park. The park was called the Park of the Proletariat from 1918 , later it was renamed the Park of the Pioneers and since 1992 it has had its current name.
