history

The previous building was a classical theater building built from wood between 1802 and 1805 according to plans by the Kiev architect Andrei Ivanovich Melenski . This first Kiev theater was demolished in 1851 because of dilapidation. The current building was built between 1978 and 1982 by the team of architects around Wadym Ivanovych Hopkalo and opened on May 26, 1982. It was a museum until 1993 and from April 2, 1993 it was converted into a cultural center. The architects received the Taras Shevchenko Prize in 1985 for building the house .

During the Euromaidan , the house served as the protesters' headquarters until it was stormed on the night of January 25-26, 2014. During this period, the collections of the Kiev City History Museum stored here were partially looted.
