The Moscow Times is an English-language online newspaper published in Moscow . Published as a daily newspaper from 1992 to November 2015, the Moscow Times appeared weekly until July 2017. It was located in typical places frequently visited by foreigners, such as hotels, cafes and restaurants, where it was distributed free of charge. Part of the print run was delivered to subscribers by post or delivery. As part of a comprehensive restructuring, the decision was made in summer 2017 to discontinue the print edition and to have the newspaper appear purely online in the future. This step was justified by the new editor-in-chief Eva Hartog Skorobogatova with a certain weakness in the newspaper's print sector and a simultaneous, strong growth in the online sector.

Owners and employees

The newspaper was founded in 1992 by the Dutch media entrepreneur Derk Sauer . The first issue appeared in March of that year. Until 2005, the newspaper was owned by Sauers Independent Media , a publishing house registered in Russia , which also included the English-language St. Petersburg Times and the Russian-language daily Vedomosti and the Russian editions of numerous glossy magazines such as FHM , Men's Health and Cosmopolitan . Derk Sauer sold his shares in Independent Media in 2005 to the Finnish media group Sanoma . Since then, the publishing house has operated under the name Independent Media Sanoma Magazines . Since foreign companies will no longer be majority owners in Russian media from 2016, the Moscow Times was sold to Demian Kudrjatsew , a former Berezovsky business partner who ran the Kommersant publishing house from 2006 to 2012 . However, since doubts arose at the beginning of 2017 about the Russian citizenship of Demyan Kudryavtsev, who is also an Israeli citizen, Kudryavtsev decided, together with the former owner and founder of the newspaper Derk Sauer, to transfer the ownership of the newspaper to a Dutch foundation . Sauer has also guaranteed the newspaper's funding for the next two years.
