history

Pechersk is one of the most important cultural areas of Kiev and the home of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra , from which the name Pechersk is derived ( Pechera means cave in Ukrainian ). The settlement near the monastery was founded in the 12th century and renamed Pechersk during the 16th or 17th centuries . From the 18th to the middle of the 20th century it was the administrative seat of the city of Kiev.

In January 1918, the area was the center of the January uprising in the Arsenal Works , which, despite its suppression, contributed significantly to the defeat of the Ukrainian armed forces and the surrender of the city of Kiev to the Soviet-Russian army under Colonel Mikhail Muravyov .

Pechersk has also been the political center of the city since the 1930s and the term “Pechersk Hill” has become synonymous with the Ukrainian government and the political elite.

Pechersk Raion

The Pechersk Raion , which is often erroneously referred to as Pechersk , includes several other historical places in Kiev besides the historical Pechersk , among which Lypky , Klow , Svirynez , Telychka and Chorna Hora are particularly noteworthy.

The raion was established in 1917, was called Lenin Raion from 1924 and Kirov Raion from 1936 to 1941, and since then Pechersk Raion again.
