Saint Nicholas Cathedral of the Pokrovskyi Monastery

The Monastery of the Protection and Intercession of the Virgin Mary ( Ukrainian Покровський монастир / Pokrowskyj monastyr ) is a nunnery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate in Shevchenko Raion of the Ukrainian capital Kiev . It was created from 1889 and should not be confused with the male monastery of the Protection and Intercession in Holosiyiv in Kiev, which existed from the 17th to the beginning of the 20th century.

history

The monastery on Kudrjawez Hill was founded in 1889 by Grand Duchess Alexandra Petrovna Romanovna , a German princess and sister-in-law of Tsar Alexander II . The Grand Duchess financed the construction of the monastery at her own expense, with the property alone costing more than 50,000 rubles. In 1889 the Ukrainian architect of Russian origin Vladimir Nikolayev began construction of the 30-building monastery complex in neo-Byzantine style. In 1896 Tsar Nicholas II visited the monastery and donated additional funds to build an outpatient and therapy center. Between August 21, 1896 and 1911, Nikolayev, according to the plans of the son of the founder of the monastery, built the St. Nicholas Cathedral , which has a capacity of 2,500 people and is Kiev's largest church to this day, with 13 gilded onion domes.

Church on the monastery grounds

The monastery was closed in 1923 and five monastery churches, built between 1889 and 1897, were demolished during the Soviet era . In October 1941 the monastery was reopened. In 2011 there were around 350 nuns in the renovated monastery complex, who were known for the production of gold-woven clothing for church figures.
