The Shevchenko Park ( Ukrainian Парк імені Тараса Шевченка ) is a park named after the Ukrainian national poet Taras Shevchenko in the center of the Ukrainian capital Kiev .
description
The right-angled park is 170 meters wide, 330 meters long and has an area of 5.6 hectares . In the park there is a restaurant, several fountains , a rotunda with a drinking water fountain and in the northeast corner of the park an area for chess and card players.
location
It is bordered to the north by Taras Shevchenko Boulevard and to the west by Volodymyrska Street ( Володимирська вулиця ) with the main building of the Taras Shevchenko University . To the west is Tereschenkivska Street ( Терещенківська вулиця ) with the Museum of Western and Oriental Art, and to the south runs Lwa Tolstoho Street ( Вулиця Льва Толстого ) with the Kiev Medical University UANM .
history
The park was first planned by Vicenti Beretti after the construction of what is now Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, but remained a military training area until 1868. Then the university park of today's Taras Shevchenko University was laid out and in 1896 a bronze monument of Tsar Nicholas II was erected in the center of the park and the park was named after him. After the October Revolution , the Tsar's monument was overthrown and in 1939 a memorial was erected in the same place for Shevshenko's 125th birthday .
