The 2015 memorial

The Taras Shevchenko Monument ( Ukrainian Пам'ятник Тарасові Шевченку ) is a monument in honor of the Ukrainian national poet Taras Shevchenko in the Ukrainian capital Kiev .

After numerous delays, the memorial was inaugurated on March 6, 1939 on the occasion of the poet's 125th birthday in Shevchenko Park opposite the main building of Taras Shevchenko University . The monument replaces a monument to Tsar Nicholas II erected by Vladimir Nikolayev , which stood here from 1893 to 1920.

description

The monument with the status of a national monument was erected on a small hill, which is climbed by stairs. The bronze sculpture created by the sculptor Matwej Manyser has a height of 6.45 meters and stands on a pedestal made of red granite with a height of 7.3 meters.

The poet, who stands upright, has his head bowed pensively forwards, his facial expressions suggesting sad thoughts. A cloak or cloak hangs in the crook of the left arm of his arms folded behind his back. On the pedestal are the dates of his life in bronze letters and the closing lines of his poem "Legacy" in Ukrainian :

“І мене в сім'ї великій

(And on the day that gives you freedom)

В сім'ї вольній, новій

(And fraternization will give)

Не забудьте пом'янути

(May you with a silent)

Незлим тихим словом

(Good words my memory) "
