The National Historical Museum of Ukraine ( Ukrainian Національний музей історії України ; Nazionalnyj musej istoriji Ukrajiny / Russian Национальный музей истории Украины ) is the leading historical Museum of Ukraine in Kiev .
location
The museum is located in the Upper Town (or Old Kiev / Old Town), the oldest part of Kiev, on Volodymyrska Street 2 in Shevchenko Raion . The Andreas Church and the Andreassteig to Podil are located near the museum .
history
The listed museum building was built between 1937 and 1939 by the Soviet architect Iossif Karakis and was originally intended to house the art school. In the 1940s, the Museum of Art and Antiquities , which had been in existence since August 1899, moved here and started operations in May 1944. In 1950 the museum was renamed the Kiev State Historical Museum, and in 1965 the State Historical Museum of the Ukrainian SSR . In 1991 the museum was given its current name.
collection
The museum's collection includes more than 800,000 exhibits from antiquity to the present day, including from the areas of ethnography , archeology , paintings and sculptures, coin collections and historical book printing.
