Nikolai Mikhailovich Bubnov , Russian Николай Михайлович Бубнов , English transcription Nikolai Mikhailovich Bubnov, (born February 2, 1858 in Kiev ; † after July 17, 1939) was a Ukrainian mathematician who edited the letters and works of Sylvester II .

Bubnow studied history at the University of Saint Petersburg and received his doctorate there in 1891 with a dissertation on Gerbert's letters, for which he had visited archives in France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. From 1890 to 1891 he taught at the high school for girls in Saint Petersburg and from 1892 he was professor of ancient and medieval history at the University of Kiev . In 1899, after further archival studies, he published Gerbert's mathematical works. In addition to Gerbert's treatise on the abacus, they also contain other related medieval texts and an appendix to the tradition of the Roman Corpus agrimensorum Romanorum ( i.e. the Roman surveyors).

After the October Revolution he went to Yugoslavia in 1919 , where he taught ancient history at the University of Ljubljana from 1920 to 1928 . He planned a French edition of Gerbert's letters, but died before that. His exact date of death is unknown (after July 17, 1939).

Encouraged by the fact that Gerbert used the Indo-Arabic numerical system on his abacus , he tried in several long essays to prove that this system was already rudimentarily known to the Greeks in ancient Europe; a view that is now considered obsolete.
