Oleksandr Pawlowytsch Matwjejew (* April 20, July 2  / May 2, 1816 greg. In Orjol Governorate , Russian Empire ; † July 23, July 4  / June 4, 1882, greg. In Kiev ) was a Ukrainian professor of medicine, obstetrician and rector of the St. . Vladimir University of Kiev .

Life

Oleksandr Matwjejew was born in the Russian governorate of Orjol to a noble family. Until 1841 he studied medicine at the Medical Faculty of Moscow University. In 1844 he was appointed assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecological diseases and childhood diseases at St. Vladimir University in Kiev. In March 1847 he received the title of Doctor of Medicine and in 1848 he became a full professor of medicine in the Department of Obstetrics, Women's and Children's Diseases of St. Vladimir University. Between 1862 and 1865 he was dean of the Faculty of Medicine and in 1862 also for the first time vice-rector of the university, which he was again between 1872 and 1875. On September 27, 1865, Matvjejew, succeeding Kallynyk Mitjukow, became the rector of the university for the first time and remained so until May 1871 , when Nikolai Bunge succeeded him . In 1869 Matvjejew received the title of Merited Full Professor of Medicine and from May 1875 to September 1878 he was rector of the university again. Nikolai Bunge was again his successor.
