Volodymyr Franzowytsch Zych (* 1805 in Charkow Governorate , Russian Empire ; † April 19, July 1  / May 1, 1837 greg. In Kiev , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire) was a Ukrainian historian, professor and rector at the St. University in Kiev.

Life

Volodymyr Zych came from a noble family and graduated from high school in Yekaterinoslav in 1822 . He then attended the Faculty of Literature at Kharkov University and graduated in 1825 as a candidate for philology . From 1831 he taught political world history at the University of Kharkov, in 1833 he became a doctor of philology and history.

In April 1834 he became an associate professor of general history at the Kiev St. Vladimir University, although he had a famous competitor for the professorship. At the end of 1833, Nikolai Gogol , supported by Alexander Pushkin and Vasily Zhukovsky, applied for this chair because he wanted to leave Saint Petersburg because of the climate .

In May 1835 Zych became a full professor of general and Russian history and dean of the faculty of philosophy at St. Vladimir University. After Mychajlo Maxymowytsch resigned as rector, he was appointed vice rector and acting rector on December 11, 1835. He received official recognition as rector of the university on December 15, 1836. Zych died in Kiev in 1837 at the age of 31 and was buried there in the cemetery of Askold's grave .
