Life

Ivan Kovalenko graduated from the University of Kiev in 1950 and subsequently taught Western languages at schools in Chernihiv and Boyarka. Ivan Kovalenko was a writer from the 1960s Ukrainian generation. Through his works abroad or as samizdat published secretly in Ukraine, he was considered a voice of human and national dignity in Ukraine. Because of his criticism of the Soviet system, he was imprisoned in a gulag in the Urals between 1972 and 1977 , where he was incarcerated with other dissidents such as Ivan Switlychnyj , Ihor Kalynez and Vladimir Bukovsky . After the collapse of the Soviet Union , he was rehabilitated in 1991.

Since the Soviet law enforcement authorities confiscated and destroyed most of Ivan Kowalenko's works, few of his poems have survived. Some of his poems were saved by his wife Iryna Kovalenko, whom she memorized during her visits to prison. Since the independence of Ukraine two collections of poetry have been published by him. A youth art festival in Ukraine was named after him.
