Vasily Alexeyevich Bilbassow ( Russian Василий Алексеевич Бильбасов , Ukrainian Василь Олексійович Більбасов Wassyl Oleksijowytsch Bilbassow ; born June 7 . Jul / 19th June  1837 greg. In Poltava , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire , † July 24 jul. / 6. August  1904 Greg. in Pavlovsk , Saint Petersburg Governorate , Russian Empire) was a Ukrainian- Russian historian and publicist .

Life

Vasily Bilbasov graduated from the historical-philological faculty of the Imperial University of Saint Petersburg in 1861 . In 1863 he defended his doctoral thesis on the history of medieval Germany and France and then went abroad for further training, where he published several articles in German magazines from 1864 to 1866. On his return in 1866 he became an assistant professor of universal history at the University of Saint Petersburg. From 1867 to 1871 he was an associate professor at St. Vladimir University in Kiev . In 1871 he left the service and worked until 1883, as a full-time journalist and editor of the liberal Petersburg newspaper Голос Golos (in German: voice ), exclusively with literature.

Bilbassow published numerous monographs and articles on German history and the papacy of the 13th century, the history of the Slavs and the 18th century. He wrote works on Jan Hus (1869) and Kyrill und Method (1871).
