Pavlo Apollonowytsch Tutkowskyj (born February 17, July 1  / March 1, 1858 greg. In Lypowez , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire ; † June 3, 1930 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian geologist , geographer and paleontologist .

Life

Pavlo Tutkowskyj studied physics and mathematics at the University of Kiev from 1877 . In 1879 he was expelled from the university for participating in a student rebellion, but in 1882 he graduated from there. From 1914 he was a professor at the University of Kiev. Tutkowskyj was a co-author of the Brockhaus-Efron . On November 27, 1918 he became a member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and in 1928 a member of the Belarusian Academy of Sciences. He helped found the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and between 1919 and 1924 headed the physical-mathematical and geology departments and was a co-founder of the Academy's Geological Museum. He wrote numerous textbooks on geography and geology and in 1923 the first Ukrainian dictionary of geological terminology. He was repeatedly accused of nationalism and sedition in the late 1920s, for which he was repeatedly interrogated by the GPU . Before he could be sent to a gulag , however, he died on June 3, 1930 in Kiev and was buried there in the Lukjanivska cemetery .
