Sergey Reformatsky ( Russian Сергей Николаевич Реформатский ; born March 20 . Jul / 1. April  1860 greg. In Borissoglebskoje , in Kostroma , today Ivanovo , Russia ; † 27. December 1934 in Moscow ) was a Russian chemist .

Life

Sergei Reformatski studied at the University of Kazan under Alexander Mikhailovich Saizew until 1882 . From 1882 to 1889 he taught at the University of Kazan. In 1889/1890 he was studying with Victor Meyer at the University of Heidelberg and with Wilhelm Ostwald at the University of Leipzig . Reformatski received his doctorate in 1891 and was appointed professor at Kiev University in 1892 , where he remained until the end of his life.

He was mainly concerned with organometallic synthesis. In 1887 Reformatski discovered that organic bromine compounds react with zinc and can be further converted with aldehydes or ketones . After the discovery of the somewhat easier to handle organomagnesium compounds and their application in Grignard reactions , the Reformatzki reaction is mainly used for α- halogenated carboxylic acid esters, as these are too reactive for the Grignard reaction. His name is also associated with the development of the rubber industry in the Soviet Union, with works between 1931 and 1934.

In 1929 he became a corresponding member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences .

He wrote an introduction to organic chemistry, the 17th edition of which appeared in 1930.

1910 to 1916 and 1920 to 1933 he was chairman of the Physico-Chemical Society in Kiev.
