Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Ge ( Russian: Николай Николаевич Ге , scientific transliteration Nikolaj Nikolaevič Ge ; * 15 February July / 27 February  1831 greg. In Voronezh ; † 1 June jul. / 13 June  1894 greg. In Liwanowsk Churor (now Chernihiv Oblast )) was a Russian painter . He was best known as a painter of historical paintings and as a portrait painter . His works can be assigned to realism .

Life

Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Ge was a Russian nobleman, his grandfather was of French origin (original name de Gay ). In 1847 Nikolai Ge began studying at the University of Kiev before moving to the University of Saint Petersburg a year later . From 1850 to 1857 he studied at the Petersburg Art Academy . Received a scholarship from the Academy, he went to Italy in 1857, where he spent the next twelve years aiming to study works of antiquity and the Renaissance on the spot. In the meantime, in 1863, he was appointed professor at this academy.

During this time he also became a founding member and participant in the Peredwischniki exhibitions .

He was also a close friend of the Russian writer Lev Tolstoy , whose religious and philosophical views he was drawn to. Ge lived on his estate in the Ukraine from 1876 to follow Tolstoy's call for a simple and rural life.

During this time Ge, contrary to his previous practice of dealing with historical paintings and portraits, primarily painted pictures with themes from the Gospels . Despite heated discussions at the presentation of these of his new pictures, these works also gave him recognition.

His works can be assigned to realism and are characterized by their psychological depth; his early works showed the influences of the painter Karl Pawlowitsch Brjullow . On his portraits is u. a. Pictured Mykola Kostomarov (1870); a self-portrait is from the years 1892/1893.
