Volodymyr Mykolaiowytsch Peretz (born March 19 . Jul / 31 March  1870 greg. In St. Petersburg , Russian Empire ; † 24. September 1935 in Saratov , Soviet Union ) was a Ukrainian -sowjetischer literary scholar , literary critic , folklorist and linguist .

Peretz mainly dealt with general questions of literary studies, the relationship between literature and folklore as well as Russian and Ukrainian literature .

Life

Volodymyr Peretz was born in Saint Petersburg and studied there until 1893 at the historical-philological faculty of the University of St. Petersburg . In 1903 he was elected professor at the University of Kiev and remained so until 1914. Between 1914 and 1917 he was a professor at the University of Saratov and from 1917 professor at the Leningrad University. He was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1914 and a member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR since 1919 . In 1934 he was arrested and exiled to Saratov. There he worked in the university library studying manuscripts and died a year later.
