Ivan Wassyljowytsch Lutschyzkyj ( Ukrainian Іван Васильович Лучицький , Russian Иван Васильевич Лучицкий Ivan Vasilyevich Lutschizki ; born June 2 . Jul / 14. June  1845 greg. In Kamianets-Podilskyi , Podolia Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 22. August 1918 in Kiev , Ukrainian State ) was a Ukrainian and Russian historian .

Life

Ivan Lutschyzkyj studied between 1862 and 1866 at the historical-philological faculty of St. Vladimir University in Kiev, where he was elected assistant professor in 1874. After 1877 his doctoral thesis at the University in Kazan on the subject Catholic League and Calvinists in France defended, he taught 1877-1903 as a professor of history at the University of Kiev, where among other Mykola Vasylenko was one of his students. From 1879 to 1889, as well as 1904 and 1905, he also taught at the Kiev high school for women ( Київські вищі жіночі курси ).

From 1894 on he traveled regularly to France to research archives there. Lutschyzkyj was a member of the Old Hromada of Kiev and one of the co-founders of the Ukrainian Scientific Society ( Українське наукове товариство ) in Kiev. He was also an employee of the newspaper Kievskaya staryna ( Кіевская старина ). Lutschyzkyj worked in the Zemstvo government of the Poltava governorate and was a city council member in Kiev from 1907 to 1912. After he was elected a member of the 3rd State Duma in 1908, he moved to Saint Petersburg . In the same year he became a professor at the Higher School for Women and a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Sciences .

Lutschyzkyj was married and the father of two sons and a daughter. According to most sources, he died aged 73 in Kiev, only the Encyclopedia of History of Ukraine writes that he on his own dacha in the village Kawraj ( Каврай ), now Staryj Kowraj ( Старий Коврай ) at Chornobai in Ukrainian Cherkasy Oblast died .

Lutschyzkyj's main works concerned the socio-economic and cultural-religious history. His study of the Ukrainian peasantry is considered the standard in the field. As a historian he gained notoriety beyond Russia, especially in France, as many of his works and documents were also published in French .
