Ivan Ivanovich Rachmaninoff ( Russian Иван Иванович Рахманинов ; born August 29, jul. / 10. September  1826 greg. In Kasinka , Tambov Governorate , Russian Empire ; † December 4 . Jul / 16th December  1897 greg. In Kiev , Russian Empire) was a Russian-Ukrainian mathematician and university rector of St. Vladimir University of Kiev .

Life

Ivan Rachmaninov was born into a noble family in the village of Kasinka in the Tambov governorate (in today's Russian Oblast Lipetsk ). From 1847 he studied mathematics in Moscow at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Lomonosov University and stayed there afterwards. In November 1852 he defended his dissertation on "The Theory of the Vertical Water Wheel", for which he received a master's degree in mathematics.

In February 1853, Rachmaninoff moved to Kiev to the Institute for Applied Mathematics at St. Vladimir University, where he received a doctorate in mathematics and astronomy on November 20, 1856 and an associate professor at the Institute for Applied Mathematics in April 1857. In February 1878 he became professor of mathematics at the university's Institute of Mechanics. Between October 1868 and May 1875 and from April 1880 to May 1881 he was also Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics and from May 1875 to September 1880 deputy university rector. After all, Rachmaninoff was rector from April 1881 to February 18, 1883 and a founding member of the Physical-Mathematical Society of Kiev's St. Vladimir University in 1890. He died in Kiev in 1897 and was buried in his birthplace.

Honors

Rachmaninov received, among other things, the Order of St. Anne first and second class, the Order of St. Vladimir 3rd class and the Order of St. Stanislaus 1st class.

In 1990 the asteroid (4345) Rachmaninoff was named after him.
