Ernst Reinhold Hofmann ( Russian Эрнст Карлович Гофман Ernst Karlovich Gofman ; born January 8 . Jul / 20th January  1801 greg. In Paistu , Governorate of Livonia , Russian Empire , † May 11 jul. / 23. May  1871 greg. In Tartu , Livonia Governorate, Russian Empire) was a Russian geologist , geographer , mineralogist, and explorer .

Life

Ernst Reinhold Hofmann came as the son of the German Baltic Lutheran pastor and provost Karl Gottlob Hofmann from Kerzdorf near Lauban and Jacobina Constantina born in Leipzig . Helprich gave birth in what is now the Estonian village of Paistu . From 1819 he studied medicine and, after Moritz von Engelhardt was able to win him over to mineralogy, until 1823 mineralogy at the University of Dorpat . Then embarked in the summer of 1823 as an expedition geologist on the Predprijatije , which of Kronstadt from to 1826 under the command of Kotzebue Otto a circumnavigation took.

After his return he received his doctorate in 1827 at the University of Dorpat. Together with Gregor von Helmersen , he explored the South Urals in 1828 , where he met Alexander von Humboldt . The knowledge he gathered there was printed in his work Geognostic Investigation of the South Ural Mountains in Berlin in 1831 . After the expedition he studied a. a. at A. Humboldt and Eilhard Mitscherlich and received his doctorate in 1832 at the University of Jena to the Dr. phil. In Dorpat, Hofmann married Emilie Henriette Antonia von Anrep on June 1, 1833.

Between 1833 and 1836 Hofmann gave lectures on geology and mineralogy at the University of Dorpat and between 1837 and 1842 he was professor of mineralogy and geognosy and from 1839 also dean of the physical-mathematical department at St. Vladimir University in Kiev and initiated there the separation of the natural sciences and mathematics.

In 1843 he traveled to eastern Siberia to investigate gold deposits, the results of which he published in 1847. Since 1844 he also served in the corps of mining engineers with the rank of colonel. There he was adopted in 1869 with the rank of lieutenant general . From 1845 to 1863 he was Professor of Mineralogy and Geology at the Imperial University of Saint Petersburg . During this time he led expeditions to explore the polar ural in 1847, 1848 and 1850 and received the first Great Constantine Medal from the Russian Geographical Society for his work Pai-Khoi or the Northern Urals .

Between 1853 and 1859 he undertook expeditions to the Central Ural, the results of the country mapping were used, and from him in 1870 in the book geological materials for making maps of the Imperial mine districts of the Ural Mountains was published. In 1863 he left the university due to illness, remained director of the Imperial Mineralogical Society until 1865 and then settled again in Dorpat, where he died at the age of 70.
