Vasily Fyodorovich Fyodorov

Vasily Fedorovich Fedorov ( Russian Василий Фёдорович Фёдоров , Ukrainian Василь Федорович Федоров Wassyl Fedorowytsch Fedorov * 1802 in St. Petersburg , Russian Empire , † March 12 . Jul / 24. March  1855 greg. In Kiev , Russian Empire) was a Russian astronomer , Professor and Rector at St. Vladimir University in Kiev.

Life

Vasily Fyodorov was born in Saint Petersburg and went to school in the St. Petersburg Education Center. Between 1823 and 1827 he studied at the Department of Physics and Mathematics of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Dorpat and was appointed Deputy Director of the observatory there in 1825, while still studying, at the request of Friedrich Struve , which he remained until 1834. In 1829 he took part in an expedition led by Friedrich Parrot to Ararat , the aim of which was to determine the height of its peaks and to determine the exact coordinates. Between 1833 and 1837 he was on an expedition in Siberia to carry out land surveys and the determination of coordinates of geographical points.

From 1837 until the end of his life, Fyodorov was professor of astronomy at the Kiev St. Vladimir University, from 1841 to prorector of the university and from March 1843 to May 1847 he was the rector of Konstantin Alexejewitsch Newolin . He was also the organizer and first director of the Astronomical Observatory of Kiev University. He died after a serious illness on March 24, 1855 in Kiev.
