Friedrich Parrot
Johann Jakob Friedrich Wilhelm Parrot (* 14. October 1792 in Karlsruhe , † January 3 . Jul / 15. January 1841 greg. In Tartu ) was a Baltic German naturalist and explorer. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Parrot ".
Life
Friedrich Parrot was born as the son of the physicist and university professor Georg Friedrich Parrot (1767-1852). From 1807 to 1814 he studied medicine at the Imperial University of Dorpat (now the University of Tartu ). In the same year he graduated as Dr. med et chir. In 1816 Parrot became a member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences .
Parrot undertook a mineralogical trip to the Crimea and the Caucasus with Moritz von Engelhardt in 1811/12 and made barometric height measurements between the Black and Caspian Seas . In 1815 Parrot became a medical officer in the Russian army , subsequently toured southern Europe and in 1821 became professor of physiology , pathology and semiotics , and later (1826) also of physics at the University of Tartu. In 1830/31 he was Vice-Rector of the University of Dorpat and Rector from 1831 to 1834.
In 1829 he traveled to the Caucasus and Armenia on behalf of the Russian government , which had just come under Russian control in the wake of the Russo-Turkish war . As part of this trip, he was the first to climb Mount Ararat on October 9, 1829 in search of Noah's Ark, together with Russian officers and Armenians . Khachatur Abovyan was among the participants .
In 1837 Parrot made a trip to the North Cape . The publication of the results of this last voyage was hindered by long sickness and early death.
The lunar crater Parrot , the Parrotspitze , the Peak Parrot and the monotypical plant genus Parrotia with the only species Parrotia persica are named after Parrot .
