Teofipol (Ukrainian Теофіполь ; Russian Теофиполь ) is an urban-type settlement in the west of the Ukrainian Khmelnitsky Oblast and the administrative center of the raion of the same name with about 6,700 inhabitants (2014).

Geographical location

Teofipol lies on the Poltwa ( Полтва ), a 43 km long right tributary of the Horyn . The village is located on the regional road P-48 and the territorial road T-20-12 81 km northwest of the Oblast capital Khmelnytskyi and 83 km northeast of Ternopil .

history

The village was first mentioned in writing in 1420, when it was granted Magdeburg law under its then name Kamin ( Камінь ) . The city bore this name until the 17th century. Subsequently, the village was called Tschowhanskyj Kamin ( Човганський Камінь ) until 1681 and from 1681 to 1740 it was called Tschowhan ( Човган ). In 1740 the place got its current name and in 1959 it received the status of an urban-type settlement.

The district of Teofipol, founded in 1923, whose administrative center is the village, has an area of ​​716 km² and a population of about 27,600 inhabitants. The population density is 39 inhabitants per km².
