Jampil ( Ukrainian Ямпіль ; Russian Ямполь Jampol , Yiddish יאמפאלא) is an urban-type settlement in the Khmelnitsky Oblast of Ukraine with about 2,000 inhabitants. The village lies on the bank of the Horyn and is 80 km northwest of the Oblast capital Khmelnytskyi .
In addition to the actual settlement, the settlement council also includes the villages Didkivzi ( Дідківці ), Lepessiwka ( Лепесівка ), Noryliw ( Норилів ) and Pankiwzi ( Паньківці ).
history
Jampil was given its current name in 1535 and town charter ( Magdeburg law ) in 1569 .
The roots of the Jewish community go back to the 15th century, probably even further. Its most important rabbis were Reb Mechel , the "holy Magid " of Złoczów , his son Reb Josef von Jampol and the "Noda Bihuda" (Rabbi Ezechiel Landau ).
