Letychiv ( Ukrainian Летичів ; Russian Летичев Letitschew , Polish Latyczów ) is an urban-type settlement in the east of the Ukrainian Oblast Khmelnytskyi and the administrative center of the raion of the same name with about 10,300 inhabitants (2019). Letychiv is one of the oldest places in Podolia .
Geographical location
Letychiv is located at the mouth of the Vovk ( Вовк ) in the Southern Bug . The village is located on the Ukrainian highway M12 52 km east of the Oblast capital Khmelnytskyi and 68 km west of Vinnytsia .
history
The town, founded in the beginning / middle of the 13th century, was granted city rights under Magdeburg law in 1466 by the Polish King Stefan Batory .
20th century
In 1924 Letychiv received urban-type settlement status. At the beginning of the 20th century and during World War I , the village was temporarily under Hungarian and German occupation and from July 17, 1941 to March 23, 1944 it was occupied by Wehrmacht troops. During the German occupation during the Second World War , the settlement was the capital of the Letichev district within the Volhynia-Podolia General District in the Reichskommissariat Ukraine . During this time, the National Socialists led to pogroms against the local Jewish population, of which 7,200 people fell victim.
Rajon
The Letychiv Raion, founded in 1923, whose administrative center is the village, has an area of 951 km² and a population of about 29,000. The population density is 31 inhabitants per km².
