Wolotschysk (Ukrainian Волочиськ ; Russian Волочиск / Wolotschisk , Polish Wołoczyska ) is the capital of the Raion of the same name ( Wolotschysk Raion ) in the Khmelnyzky Oblast of Ukraine with about 20,000 inhabitants and is located on the left bank of the Ternlast border to the Oblast of Sbrutsch . The Oblast capital Khmelnyzkyj is about 70 kilometers east of the city.

history

The first written mention of the city comes from 1463, the place was on an important trade route between Central Europe and Russia, this is also reflected in the meaning of the Ukrainian name, which means "transport" in German. Initially, the place belonged to the Zbaraski family as part of the Polish aristocratic republic , from 1631 to the Wiśniowiecki family and from 1695 to the well-known Polish aristocratic Potocki family . After the place fell to Russia in 1772, the Potocki family sold Wolotschysk to the Moszyński family , who strongly promoted the local economy and thus helped the place to grow strongly. With the construction of the Lemberg – Podwołoczyska railway (owned by the Galician Carl Ludwig Railway ) with a connection to the Russian railway network to Kiev , a train station was opened in the village in 1871.

Since Volotschysk was on the border between the Russian Empire and Austria-Hungary ( Galicia ), the place was also a border town. Beyond the border, the Galician border town of Pidvolochysk developed into a trading hub, the name of which is derived from Volochysk.

After the place was located directly on the frontline during World War I and suffered damage in the process, revolutionary turmoil haunted it several times . Volotschysk now belonged to Ukraine and was a border town between the Soviet Union and the newly formed Polish Republic . In 1923 it became the center of the Rajons of the same name. During the Second World War in July 1941, German troops occupied the place and killed almost 9,300 residents until it was retaken by the Red Army on March 17, 1944. After the war it was rebuilt quickly and new industries, especially food factories, were built in the village; Volochysk has had city status since 1970.
