The Krasne – Odessa railway is a main line in Ukraine . It runs from Krasne via Ternopil , Khmelnyzkyj , Schmerynka , Wapnjarka and Podilsk to Odessa in the south of Ukraine. The electrified line is wide-gauge (1,520 mm). The operation of the line is guaranteed by the Ukrainian Railways , the section from Krasne to Pidwolotschysk is carried out by the Lvivska Salisnyzja , from Volotschysk to Vapnjarka by the Piwdenno-Sachidna Salisnyzja , the rest of the line to Odessa by the Odeska Salisnyzja .

history

Railway station building in Pidvolochysk around 1900

The railway line is one of the oldest rail connections in the region, the eastern part was then in the Russian Empire while the western part was part of the Austrian Galicia . The line between Odessa and Podilsk was opened in 1865 by the Odessa-Parkany Railway , later part of the Odessa Railways. In 1870, the line from Schmerynka to Podilsk was continued by the Kiev-Balta Railway , and in 1871 it was extended via Chmelnyzkyj to Volotschysk to the then Russian border via the Kiev-Brest Railway .

The part of the railway located in what was then Galicia was opened in several steps by the Galician Carl Ludwig Railway . The Krasne – Złoczów line, built as a branch line to the railway to Brody, was opened on July 12, 1869, followed by the Złoczów – Tarnopol line on December 22, 1870 and the remaining line from Tarnopol – Podwołoczyska with a connection to the Russian network on October 4, 1871 . Since the Galician Carl Ludwig Railway was built in the normal gauge used in Austria , no continuous train runs could take place. Trade goods therefore had to be reloaded in Pidvolochysk and travelers had to change trains. A large transshipment and transfer station was created. The line was licensed on May 15, 1867.

The branch line to Hrymajliw was only opened on August 12, 1897 as the local railway Borki Wielkie – Grzymałów , the management was taken over by the Austrian State Railway. The concession of this local railway line took place on March 23, 1896. The local railway existed in its independent form until 1932, when it was taken over by the Polish State Railways.

After the end of the First World War , the western part of the railway to Pidwolotschysk / Wolotschysk came to the Polish State Railways , the eastern part went to the Soviet Railway . The direct connection to Russia was interrupted, the traffic ended at the border station.

Due to the occupation of eastern Poland by the Soviet Union shortly at the beginning of the Second World War in 1939, the western part of the line also came into the possession of the Soviet railways, which immediately began to switch individual lines to Russian broad gauge (1520 mm), but this was done after the attack Germany reversed to the Soviet Union in 1941 and subordinated the routes to the Eastern Railway . The Lemberg — Krasne — Tarnopol — Podwoloczyska line was given the number 535. At the same time, a second track was laid on the previously single-track line for strategic reasons. After the end of the war, the line was again taken over by the Soviet Railways, which traced the entire route back to broad gauge and integrated it into their network, which was taken over by the Ukrainian Railways in 1991.

The Krasne-Ternopil-Khmelnyzkyj-Schmerynka-Wapnjarka section was fully electrified between 1995 and 1998 due to the upgrading of the connection to Lviv. In 1989 the connection from Odessa to Vapnyarka was electrified.
