The Odessa – Basarabeasca railway line is a main line in Ukraine and Moldova . It runs from Odessa in the south of Ukraine through the Ukrainian part of Bessarabia to Basarabeasca in southern Moldavia, where it connects to the Galați – Bender ( Moldova ) railway . The single-track and electrified line is wide-gauge (1,520 mm). The operation from Odessa to Beresyne is run by the Ukrainian Railways , in particular the Odeska Salisnyzja , the subsequent line across the border to Moldova (Basarabeasca) has been dismantled since the end of the 1990s, in Basarabeasca the Calea Ferată din Moldova has been operating.

history

The oldest section of the route is the short section between Odessa Central Station and the branch to the south, which was opened in 1865. The section between Basarabeasca and Bilhorod-Dnistrowskyj was built between 1915 and 1916 by the Russian Southwest Railways in order to also develop the southern part of Bessarabia. On January 2, 1916, the line from what was then Romanowka to what was then Akkerman was opened, the line was then extended during the First World War via railway ferries or pontoon bridges to cross the Dniester-Liman to Odessa, there was already a line to Owidiopol, which simply was extended. The Odessa to Owidiopol line was also opened in 1916; although there was a company that wanted to build this line as early as 1891, a license that had been granted expired in 1894. After 1918 the temporary bridges were destroyed and most of the line to Bugaz (today Satoka ) came to the Kingdom of Romania , the line section was converted to standard gauge with 1435 mm gauge, like many others, in the years 1921 to 1923, after the annexation by the Soviet Union after the Second World War , the route was then backtracked. After the construction of a wooden bridge over the Liman had already started in 1940, it was no longer built in 1941 after the attack on the Soviet Union and was only restored after 1945. Since 1955 it has also been possible to cross the Limans using a lifting bridge (built from December 25, 1953 to December 5, 1955) and thus without the use of ferries. In 1973 the route between Odessa and Karolino-Buhas was electrified, and in 1974 the extension was made Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi. The line between Beresyne and Basarabeasca has been interrupted since 1997, a reconstruction of the line is often discussed because of the bypassing of Transnistria and the general movement of goods, but has so far failed again and again due to the excessive costs on the Ukrainian side. In October 2015, the Ukrainian and Moldovan railways discussed the project again and the prospect of starting construction work in the summer of 2016. An international Beresina border crossing is also to be implemented in the course of this project. In 2001, passenger traffic to Illichivsk (now Chornomorsk) was discontinued, and in 2007 plans were briefly to dismantle the tracks between Arzys and Beresyne, but these plans were discarded because of the possible rebuilding of the line to Moldova.
