The Arzys – Ismajil railway line is a branch line in Ukraine . It branches off the main line between Beresyne and Odessa near Arzys in the south of Ukraine and leads through the Ukrainian part of Bessarabia to the Danube bank to Ismajil . The single-track, non-electrified line is wide-gauge (1,520 mm) and is operated by the Ukrainian Railways , in particular the Odeska Salisnyzja .

history

The railway line is relatively new, it was planned after the occupation of Bessarabia by the Soviet Union on June 28, 1940 as a strategic rail link to the port of Ismajil. Construction began on August 20, 1940 with a contingent of 7,000 people. At the beginning of October, the excavation work, during which 113,000 cubic meters of earth had to be moved, was completed and the route was opened in 1940.
