The origins of today's company go back to 1865 when the first section of the Odessa-Balta railway was opened by the Odessa-Parkany Railway. In 1871 this and several other lines became the Odessa-Balta Railway and, from 1874, the Odessa Railway Company . Meanwhile, the Balta railway accident occurred in 1875 . In 1879 there was another merger with the Kiev-Brester Railway to form the Brest-Odessa Railway Company . In 1882, by merging with several other railways, the Russian Southwest Railways were founded, which were nationalized in 1895. Following a comprehensive railway reform in the Soviet Union in 1936 the Odessa Railways (Russian Одесская железная дорога / was Odesskaja schelesnaja doroga ) again an independent company, in 1953 it was with the railway lines of the Moldavian SSR to Odessa Kischinewer Railway (Russian Одесско-Кишинёвская железная дорога / Odessko-Kishinjowskaja schelesnaja doroga ), both companies only became independent again in 1979, and since then the company has remained unchanged under Ukrainian leadership since 1991.
