Writer Ned Vizzini and actor Keir Gilchrist at TIFF 2010

After repeated thoughts of suicide, 16-year-old Craig Gilner decides to be admitted to the psychiatric department of a hospital. Craig explains to the on-duty Dr. Mahmoud that he needs help immediately, and so he instructs him in the hospital's psychiatry. In short flashbacks you learn that Craig is under a lot of pressure because of his school. His father wants him to apply for a prestigious summer school. He is also always in the shadow of his best friend Aaron. Craig has also been in love with his girlfriend Nia for two years. As the juvenile psychiatry is currently being renovated, Craig is staying in the adult psychiatry with a few other teenagers.

Craig is introduced to Bobby, an adult patient who claims he is here on vacation only. During a discussion, Craig notices that Bobby is afraid of an interview that could open up a new future for him. When Bobby explains that he doesn't have suitable clothes for the conversation, Craig lends him a shirt from his father. Noelle, a teenage patient who is here about self-harm , notices this nice gesture and gives him a note inviting him to an evening meeting. Later, Craig and Noelle take part in a drawing lesson.

Craig slowly gets used to it and makes friends with the other patients, especially Bobby and Noelle. Bobby tells Craig that he is the father of a little girl and that the truth is that he is in the clinic for trying to kill himself six times. When Craig helps Bobby with his problems, Bobby returns the favor and gives Craig tips on how to conquer Noelle. One evening, Nia visits Craig and tells him that she and Aaron broke up. Craig goes to his room with Nia, where she tries to seduce him. But Craig's roommate Muqtada, an old Egyptian who has never left his room, bothers them. When Nia runs out of the room, Craig follows her and says that he loves her, not knowing that Noelle is behind him. Angry, Noelle runs away, leaving a self-portrait that she wanted to give to Craig.

But Craig apologizes to Noelle, and so the two sneak out of the psychiatric ward. Eventually they land on the roof of the hospital, where Craig finally makes it up to ask Noelle out on a date. Noelle says yes and kisses him. During a conversation with the head of department, Craig explains that he wants to follow his dream and become an artist. He has also realized that his problems are not as bad as some other patients'. In the evening Craig throws a pizza party as a farewell party for him and Bobby. Craig plays Egyptian music at the celebration, motivating Muqtada to leave his room. Craig also arranges with Bobby that they should meet once after they are released.

The next morning, Craig asks where Bobby is, but is told that he was released early that morning. After Craig leaves the hospital, he is seen starting out on a date with Noelle. You can also see how he becomes friends with Aaron and Nia (who are back together again), starts a career as an artist and explains to his father that he will go his own way and not go to summer school. In the end, Craig explains that he is not finally cured, but that the stay has helped a lot and he will make it with the help of his friends and family.

Reviews

“The filmmakers deserve credit for making 'It's A Kind Of Funny Story' [sic!] So entertaining. The missing moments of tension in the story are easily made up for by cleverly distributed humor points and the strong actors. "

"'It's Kind of a Funny Story' is an homage to life."

- moviemaze.de

“It's a double edged sword. Despite the unusual setting in the genre, everything in 'It's Kind of a Funny Story' seems somehow (too) familiar, be it from various teen comedies or from ' One Flew Over the Cuckoo 's Nest ' "
