The Rosdilna – Iași railway is a main line in Ukraine , Transnistria , the Republic of Moldova and Romania . It runs from Rosdilna in Ukraine via Tiraspol and Bender in Transnistria and on via Chișinău , Corneşti and Ungheni in Moldova to Iași in Romania. The single-track line is wide-gauge (1,520 mm), between Ungheni and Iași there are standard-gauge (1,435 mm) tracks to connect to the Romanian network. The operation from Rosdilna to Kuchurhan is run by the Ukrainian railways , in particular the Odeska Salisnyzja , the subsequent line has been operated by the Transnistrian Railway Company since 2004 , from Bender the trains are operated by the Moldavian Railway to the border to Ungheni, from where the Romanian ones take over Railways operate.
history
The line was opened in stages between 1865 and 1875 to ensure a connection from Chișinău and Ungheni in Bessarabia and on to Iași in Romania from the line between Balta and Odessa, which was completely opened in 1865. The line between Rosdilna and Kutschurhan was opened in 1865, followed by the extension to Tiraspol in 1867, the extension to Chișinău via Bender in 1871, the section between Chișinău and Cornești in 1873, the completion of the cross-border line between Unșgheni and Iaşi in 1874 and the last stretch in 1875 between Corneşti and Ungheni. A large part of the line came to Romania after the end of the First World War , the Romanian State Railways took over operation and between 1921 and 1923 switched the line to the border with the Soviet Union on standard gauge (1,435 mm). After the occupation by the Soviet Union in 1940, the lines were again widened to broad gauge, but again after the reconquest by Romania in 1941 they were converted back to standard gauge and then finally expanded to broad gauge to the Ungheni border station after the final stay with the Soviet Union in 1945. In 1991 the line between Rosdilna and Chișinău was to be expanded and electrified, the erection of the overhead line masts was completed up to the Calfa stop, but due to the Transnistrian conflict and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it was no longer operational, so that only on the line today until Kutschurhan electrical operation and then only diesel operation is possible. The branch line to Hlinaia has also been accessible from the Transnistrian side since November 6, 2008 due to the construction of a new 1.5-kilometer connecting route; previously, access was only possible from the Ukrainian side via the Kuchurhan border station. After the end of the Transnistria conflict in 1992, the train service was stopped, then there were again direct connections from Chișinău to Shmerynka (on to Moscow ) and Odessa , but these have been stopped since March 6, 2006 so that there was only freight traffic for a short time Transnistrian and Ukrainian side, but these long-distance trains are now running again on this route. On the border with Romania, the cars in Ungheni are switched to the standard gauge (1,435 mm) and then continue in this lane to Iași.
