The PŽD route network

The Pridnestrovskaja seleznaja doroga (abbreviation PŽD , Russian Приднестровская железная дорога / ПЖД , Ukrainian Придністровська залізниця the internationally recognized Moldovan Republic of Moldova is the non-recognized Republic of Moldova Praviznyi Prauizny in the Republic of Moldova . The PŽD was founded in 2004 in connection with heightened tensions between Transnistria and the Moldovan government. It suited the routes and vehicles of the Moldovan railways Calea Ferată din Moldova located on Transnistrian territoryon. The PŽD network consists of only two unconnected sections of the route that cross Transnistria in a west-east direction (from the border with the Moldovan core area to the Ukrainian border).

Operational management

Due to the separate location of the railway lines, the activities of the PŽD are currently essentially limited to handling transit traffic as well as local and through freight traffic. No transport service is provided in passenger transport. The operation of the through trains is carried out by Ukrainian Railways personnel . The implementation is based on an international agreement between the Republic of Moldova and Transnistria as well as Ukraine and Russia. Among other things, it was stipulated that no border controls would be carried out on trains through Transnistria. There is therefore an immigration desk at the train station in Tiraspol. Only at the Ukrainian border station in Kuchurhan are controls carried out by Ukrainian border officials. Long- distance trains no longer stop in Rîbnița .

Network around Rîbnița

The northern part of the PŽD consists of the section between Rîbnița and Cobasna of the Slobidka – Bălți line built in 1893 by the Russian Southwest Railways. The operation mainly comprises the operation of the local industrial connections. In addition to the largest industrial company in Transnistria, the Moldovan Steel Works, these include a cement factory, a sugar factory and the river port. A pair of trains runs between Ukraine and Moldova every day. However, this does not stop in Transnistria. Passenger traffic no longer takes place at any of the 3 stations. However, a ticket office in Rîbnița train station is still open.

Tiraspol and South

The southern network of the PŽD consists of the section between Bender and Novosavițcaia and a branch to Hlinaia . The line was built between 1865 and 1875 by the Russian Kinischauer Railway as part of a connection from Odessa via Chișinău and Ungheni ( Bessarabia ) to Iași (Romania) on the line between Balta and Odessa opened in 1865. In 1865 Kuchurhan was reached from Rosdilna. In 1867 the extension to Tiraspol followed, in 1871 the extension to via Bender to Chișinău. Romania was reached in 1874.

The Bender – Galați railway to Romania , which opened in 1877, joins in Bender . On the Moldovan side, the route from Chișinău to Căinari, which was destroyed in 1944, was rebuilt in autumn 2005 , so that trains can again run from Chișinău to the south, bypassing the Bender junction.

In Novosavițcaia a route branches off to Hlinaia. However, this could only be reached from Tiraspol by shunting in Kuchurhan, Ukraine. As a remedy, a 1.5 km long curved track was laid in Novosavițcaia in 2008 (construction started on May 26th, opening on November 6th, 2008). The route is only operated in freight traffic and is used to supply the Termocentrala de la Cuciurgan power plant (Молдавская ГРЭС / Moldavskaya GRES) in Dnestrovsc, which with 2.25 GW output is the largest power plant in the Republic of Moldova and Transnistria, large parts of the Moldova and the southern Ukraine supplied. Electricity has also been exported to Romania since 2008.

Passenger traffic takes place only on the main route and only in the form of 2 pairs of trains (4 in the holiday season). Stopping points are Tiraspol and Bender-1 (direction Galați) and Bender-2 (direction Chișinău). One pair of the Russian State Railways runs between Moscow ( Kiev train station ) and Chișinău (train number 065/066), the other (train number 641/642), operated by the Moldavian Railways , serves the Chișinău-Odessa connection. During the holiday season, in addition to a pair of amplifiers between Moscow and Chișinău (train number 595/596), another pair (train number 051/052) is used between Saratov (Russia) and Varna (Bulgaria).

The 37 km long line from the station of the broad gauge railway line Krasne - Odessa in Popeljuchy to Camenca was opened in 1939. From Camenca there was a 4 km long connection to a furniture factory in Podoimița, which ended in a turning loop in the factory premises. In 1950 Popeljuchy closed the gap to the line Rudnyzja - Tschornomin on the other side of the broad-gauge line, which had previously only been used as a plant connection for a sugar factory . For this purpose, a 900 m long loop with a bridge was created over the broad gauge line. This allowed through passenger trains to be run in the Hajworon narrow-gauge network. A total of 18 km lay in the area of today's Republic of Moldova / Transnistria. The Ukrainian railway ( Odeska Salisnyzja ) continued to operate even after independence in 1991, until the end of traffic . Vehicles of the SŽD series ТУ4 and ТУ6 were used as locomotives in freight traffic . On the Ukrainian side, most of the tracks were dismantled by 1999. In Transnistria, the systems have also been largely removed since then.
