Parcani ( Russian Парканы Parkany ; Bulgarian Паркани ; Ukrainian Паркани Parkany ) is a municipality in Transnistria with about 10,500 inhabitants. Parcani is about 65% inhabited by ethnic Bulgarians . According to some sources, it is the largest Bulgarian-majority settlement outside of Bulgaria .

location

Parcani is located in Slobodzeja district , on the eastern side of the Dniester River . The municipality is located just 1.5 kilometers east of Bender and 2.5 kilometers from the urban area of Tiraspol . A trolleybus line connects the settlement with the two neighboring cities. Parcani is part of the Tiraspol-Bendery agglomeration , which has a total of around 350,000 inhabitants.

It is a large rural village , which runs in a north-south direction and is traversed in an east-west direction by the road from Tiraspol to Bender. Most of the shops and a shoe factory of the German-Transnistrian company Terri-Pa , which manufactures special shoes for the European market, are located there.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1770. In 1812 Parcani became part of the Russian Empire. Since the beginning of the 19th century, more and more Bulgarian settlers have settled in the village. During the Soviet period, the place belonged to the Moldovan Soviet Republic . Parcani has been part of the de facto independent Republic of Transnistria since 1992 . Since 2008 there has been a monument to the Bulgarian national hero Vasil Levski in the city .

population

The peculiarity of Parcani is the large Bulgarian population group, which, according to the 2004 census, also makes up the majority of the total population of Parcani. Otherwise the village is ethnically very diverse with larger Russian , Ukrainian and Moldovan minorities .
