The Bender – Galați railway is a main line in the Republic of Moldova , Transnistria , Ukraine and Romania . It runs from Bender in Transnistria via Căinari and Basarabeasca in Moldova and on via Reni in Ukraine and Giurgiuleşti in Moldova to Galați in Romania, on a short stretch north of Basarabeasca there is also Ukrainian territory and there are stops. The single-track line is wide-gauge (1,520 mm), in Galați there is a connection to the Romanian network with tracks in normal-gauge (1,435 mm). The operation is guaranteed by the Moldavian Railway from Bender to Galați, from there the Romanian Railway takes over the operation.

history

The line was opened in 1877 by the Bendery-Galatzer Railway , in 1882 the line became part of the Russian Southwest Railways . The line came to Romania after the end of the First World War , the Romanian State Railways took over the operation and gauged the line to standard gauge (1,435 mm) between 1921 and 1923. After the occupation by the Soviet Union in 1940, the lines were widened again to broad gauge, but again after the reconquest by Romania in 1941 they were converted back to standard gauge, and then finally after the final stay with the Soviet Union in 1945 in broad gauge to the border station Giurgiuleşti, later to the steel mill Galați to be expanded. Due to the secession of Transnistria and the problem of the use of the railways in this area by the Moldavian Railways, a new line from Chișinău to Căinari was opened in autumn 2005 , so that trains can run again to the southern parts of Moldova. In 2008 the new line from Giurgiuleşti to Cahul was added.

business

Operation on the entire route has been discontinued since March 2006 because Transnistria refused to pass through, but operations to Bender have been possible again since October 1, 2010. After the border with Romania, the cars must be in Galaţi to the standard gauge (1435 mm) umgespurt be to continue to drive in the Romanian network, but there is only freight traffic on the section between Giurgiuleşti and Galaţi, so this Umspurung is not necessary.
